Common reasons Malta student visa plans run into trouble
Most of these can be prevented with early preparation.
Choosing an unlicensed school
If your institution is not properly licensed, your visa is at risk. Check before you pay.
Unclear proof of funds
Officers look closely at how you will support yourself and where the money comes from. Organize this early.
No accommodation or insurance arranged
Both are usually required for your application. Sort them out before you submit.
Starting too late
With an entry visa and a residence permit to complete, timing matters. Early applicants have more choice.

Questions about studying in Malta
Do I need a visa to study in Malta?
Philippine passport holders generally need a national long-stay visa (type D) for courses longer than 90 days. After you arrive, you apply for a residence permit through Identity Malta. We confirm what applies to your course and dates.
How much money do I need to show for a Malta student visa?
You need to show that you can pay your tuition, accommodation and living costs. The amounts authorities expect can change, so we confirm the current figures and help you organize your documents and the source of your funds.
Can I work while studying in Malta?
Students can often work part-time alongside their studies, commonly up to 20 hours a week during term. Conditions and permissions apply, so we confirm the current rules with you.
Do I need an English test to study in Malta?
Visa authorities may not ask for a specific test, but most schools want proof of English ability. Some accept alternatives such as a medium-of-instruction certificate. Requirements differ by school, and we help you check.
Does my school need to be licensed?
Yes. Choose an institution licensed by Malta's National Commission for Further and Higher Education (NCFHE). Studying at an unlicensed school can put your visa at risk, so we help you check before you pay any fees.
What happens after I arrive in Malta?
You register with Identity Malta and apply for your residence permit, often called the e-Residence card. You usually give biometrics and submit documents such as your acceptance letter, proof of funds, accommodation contract and health insurance.
What if my student visa was refused before?
A refusal does not always mean you cannot try again. Share your refusal letter during your assessment and we will review the reasons and discuss whether to reapply with stronger evidence or consider another option.
Is the initial assessment really free?
Yes. AOICI currently offers a free, commitment-free initial assessment so you can understand your options before deciding on next steps.
